Now that the girl was gone, he felt differently about the whole thing. The police were everywhere, knocking on doors, asking questions. He was superior to them, so it didn’t matter whether they showed up to question him. He’d always be one step ahead of them. But it bothered him how little respect they showed for what he’d managed to achieve. He’d done the impossible, and no one even suspected him for it. It was worth celebrating, but he couldn’t celebrate. Couldn’t do anything to draw attention to himself because that would be the end of it.

The house was dark, although it was the middle of the day. He’d drawn the blinds shut, and that was how he liked it best. Whether it was daytime or night, he didn’t know and didn’t want to know. The passing of time meant nothing to him.

Photographs blinked onto the screen one by one as they downloaded from his phone. Smiling faces. People laughing. Everyone oblivious. Nothing was new there—it was always this way. It helped him work without suspicion, but it was his invisibility that’d inspired him in the first place.

He was invisible to the world around him, which was kind of like a superpower. Only no spider had bitten him to bring this power into his life—he was simply unseen. Had been since birth. His own mother had overlooked him, told him he was no one special, that nothing he did could ever get her attention since she had so many other more important people to take her focus.

It didn’t matter. None of it mattered any longer. He didn’t feel anything about her or anyone else. Only the hunt. That was all that mattered to him now. The only thing that gave him a rush of adrenaline. The only pursuit that provoked feelings of any kind in him. He loved the hunt. It was almost anticlimactic when it was over; the build-up to the event was what brought him the most satisfaction. And when it was over, he was disappointed again.

He would go out soon. Couldn’t wait years like the last time. He’d been afraid. The detective had been closing in, and he thought he’d be caught. But of course, he wasn’t. He was too smart for them. And this time, he’d left no trace behind. They’d never figure it out, and he could move on, knowing that he was safe. Fear was no longer part of his life—he’d risen above it. He was stronger than that now. Every time made him stronger. Every time built the person he was destined to become. His prey was a stepping stone in his becoming.

He flipped through the photographs. It was difficult to choose. There were so many options. But only one caught his eye.
